3 Healthy Joint and Flexibility strategies

by Dr. Mathew Stockstad on April 5, 2012

In our Asheville – Fairview Chiropractic office we deal with joint pain everyday.  There is seldom a day that we do not get the question “what can be done to keep my Joints from hurting and being so stiff”?”   There are a number of things that you can do to keep your joints healthy.  So here are 3 of the top strategies that we give to our patients.

The 3 strategies you use to help keep your joints healthy and flexible?

1.  Exercise –  I know that you may have heard that this can degenerate your joints.  The right kind of exercise can support healthy  joint function.  This is the  low-impact type exercises like walking, riding a bike, swimming, and yoga.  This is not only good  for your joints, but is is essential for your heart, lungs, and the rest of your body.

The key is to do the right exercise and to start slowly and build up with consistency.    Many of our Asheville Chiropractic patients have been lead to believe that if they have painful knees or a bad backs they need to avoid exercises all together.  This will lead to  muscle weakness, loss of bone strength and joint stiffness.  The old saying “If you don’t use it you will loose it!” is true.

2,  Maintain your optimal weight   Another benefits of exercise is its ability to help you achieve and maintain your ideal weight.  This will decrease the daily stress on your joints and make movement and exercises easier to do.  It will not only make you joints feel better but it will help your over all health.

3.  Eat a Healthy diet. This is a topic that could be discussed for hours but I like to give just some main keys that can make a huge difference.

Eliminate sugary foods and sodas from your diet.  These provide empty calories with little to no nutrition which means they do not support healthy joints or a healthy body. The fact is that  their potential for decreasing your health is well documented.

Look to increase your high water content foods in your diet.  What are these?  They are vegetables and fruits.  It is not a diet of elimination but rather adding in the healthy foods in place of the unhealthy foods.
